What is Ovarian cyst?

An ovarian cyst is when fluid gets collected within an ovary which has walls that are very thin. If there is a growth that is bigger than 2 centimeters this is known as an ovarian cyst. Sometimes it is as large as a cantaloupe or as tiny as a pea.

In the beginning an ovarian cyst does not cause any harm. If a woman is in her premenopausal stage, a cyst might be found in her ovary. A survey taken in the United States concludes that in postmenopausal women nearly 14.8 percent had an ovarian cyst. Therefore we can conclude that age does not play a part and a cyst of this nature can have its effect on any woman. In women who are pregnant a cyst can occur more frequently. Sometimes there is pain and bleeding as a result of a cyst. If a cyst is bigger than 5 centimeters, it can be removed through surgery.
